Ski slope of New Denmark (am_1869)
During the first part of the 20th century, high jumping ski competitions were held and
attracted the skiers. This slope was developed by the Nyborg brothers of New Denmark who were
excellent skiers. In 1872, the first Danish colonists came to live on the fertile and mountainous
land granted to them on the east of the Salmon River in Victoria County. They cleared the forests
and became skilful farmers. They built churches, schools and created a strong Danish colony,
faithful to its culture and traditions. Their national celebration day on June 19th
commemorates the arrival of the first group of 29 Danish settlers. The summit of the Klokkedale,
called the 19th of June Hill, was the preferred place for social and recreational
meetings. Photo taken in 1940 and lent by Jeanne Albert Chiasson.
