Church of Drummond (am_785)

Click to enlargeFrom the beginning, Drummond was an agricultural parish renowned for its fertile land. Around 1860, some Irish lived there and around 1880, French Canadians came from Madawaska and Témiscouata counties to clear some land and settle there. The parish of Drummond was founded in 1890 and the parish priest Georges B. Gauvin built a little church. In a letter to Bishop Rogers in March 1905, L.-N. Dugal, vicar general wrote: «It appears that the parishioners of Drummond wish to build everything new. They are generous and have the means. The parish priest, I hope, will stimulate them to the end.» In 1906, Father Félix Dugal, parish priest since 1894, built a spacious church which is still standing. In 1940, an Eucharistic Congress organized by Father Jos Paul Levesque marked the fiftieth anniversary of this prosperous agricultural parish. Photo taken around 1945.
