Click to enlargeThe first chapel of the Maliseet mission was built in 1853 and was served by the parish priest of Saint-Basile and later by that of Grand Falls. The Franciscan Fathers arrived there in 1921 and a new church was built in 1925. It was called Ste. Anne, for the patroness Saint of the First Nation. The chiefs elected for three years were: Salomon Bear in 1922, Charles Saulis in 1926, Noel Bear in 1929, Gabriel Perley in 1932, William Saulis in 1935, 1945 and 1955; Peter Joseph Bear in 1942, Simon Perley in 1935 and Philipp Sapier in 1957. Father Bérard Norbert served the parish from 1922 to 1942; and Father Samuel Côté devoted himself there from 1935 to 1936 and then from 1940 to 1960. The Sisters of Charity of St. John, New Brunswick, were also devoted to the Ste. Anne of Maliseet parish, from 1927 to 1985. Photo taken around 1930.
