Potato picking time Drummond (am_2228)
The potato industry began very early in Drummond. Le Moniteur Acadien notes that in 1887, the
exportation of potatoes by railroad to the United States is at its beginning, that is about 80,000
bushels. However the mechanisation of the farms really began in the 1920's. In the beginning, horses
were used for the potato crops, and workers picked the potatoes by hand and used baskets made by the
First Nation Maliseet in Tobique. The barrels were made of soft wood. On the left, a team of horses
and a wagon used to haul the barrels to the potato houses. On the right, a mechanical potato digger
pulled by horses. Photo vers 1925.
