"The Brydone Jack Observatory, the oldest astronomical observatory in Canada is located on the campus of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick. There is an observer's room and a transit room. The creation of this observatory, in 1851, was due to William Brydone Jack (1819-1886) who was professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at King's College in 1840 (King's College became the University of New Brunswick in 1858). Jack served as President of the university from 1861 to 1885. The observatory was established for both longitude determinations and instruction in astronomy. Through the interest and efforts of J. E. Kennedy..., in 1955 the observatory was declared a National Historic Site and a plaque was affixed to itby the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. The observatory stands on its original site, and since 1985 has been operated as a museum. The original 6-inch, f/15, mahogany and brass refractor, by Merz of Munich, is under the octagonal dome." L'observatoire Brydone Jack, le plus vieil observatoire astronomique du Canada, est situé sur le campus de l'université du NB, à Fredericton. Une des pièces sert pour l'observation tandis que l'autre est consacrée aux lunettes méridiennes. La création de cet observatoire en 1851 est dû à William Brydone Jack (1819-1986) qui était alors professeur de mathématiques et de "Natural Philosophy" au King's College en 1840 (Le King's College est devenu l'université du Nouveau-Brunswick en 1859). Jack était président de l'université de 1861 à 1885. L'observatoire servait à la fois pour l'éducation en astronomie et pour le détermination des longitudes.
Grâce à l'intéret et aux efforts de J. E. Kennedy, en 1955 l'observatoire fut déclaré Site historique national. On peut y voir une plaque à cet effet près de l'entrée. L'observatoire se trouve sur son site original et depuis 1985, il sert de musée -ouvert sur semaine (506-453-4723). Le télescope original: réfracteur 6-po., f/15, fait d'acajou et de laiton, construit par Merz de Munich, est sous un dôme octagonal. J'ai été très impressionnée de l'ingéniosité d'utiliser le système de balancier d'horloge au lieu d'un moteur pour suivre le mouvement des étoiles... Il n'y avait pas d'électricité alors!
